Picardy
General
The Picardy region of France is in the north. It has a climate
similar to that of the UK. It comprises towns, industry, lakes,
rivers and forests. Historically it was the first French region.
More recently it was the scene for some of the worst horrors
of the First World War at the battle of the Somme.
Towns and Cities
Main towns in Picardy are Laon (Aisne), Beauvais (Oise), Amiens
(Somme)
Access
The area is close to the UK and is easily accessible by ferry,
road, and rail. Picardy is not well served directly by air
from the UK. However you can fly to Paris then take a train.
Places of Interest
Amiens, known as the 'Stone Bible' is famous for historic
buildings and Gothic cathedral. It is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. Alternatively you can visit the botanical reserve
of Marais de Cessiere, or visit the Marquenterre bird sanctuary.
S
Things to do
As well as the countryside, watersports, and historical monuments
and buildings you can play a variety of sports, or relax with
the children at Parc Astérix.
Property
Picardyhas seen an increase in popularity
with UK citizens in recent years due to the relatively lower
prices and proximity to the UK. Prices are higher then before.
Bargains in the area are becoming much harder to find but
not impossible.
Property Investment Value
Property has risen in the area recently. The signs are that
it may continue to rise, but at a slower rate than before.
If you are looking for an investment then Picardy could be
a decent bet, but there are possibly better bets elsewhere
in France if you want to travel further afield.
Cuisine
As with other areas of France the Picardy
is famous for its own cuisine. Foie gras is popular here,
as is smoked eel or duck. The area is also well known for
Maroilles cheese, 'gateau battu', or a savoury pancake called
a 'ficelle picarde'.
To Conclude
Picardy has become increasingly popular over the last few
years with the British. It is geographically close to England
and is very handy for those residents of the south of England
who have easy access to ferries and trains. Picardy has historical
significance, and reasonably priced properties, but doesn't
have the climate or spectacular scenery of French regions
further to the south.
