Lower Normandy
General
The Lower Normandy region of France is in the north west.
It has a climate similar to that of the UK, and boasts forests
and bubbling streams as well as coastal resorts. Historically
it is famous for the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944
Towns and Cities
Main towns in Lower Normandy are Caen (Calvados), Saint-Lô
(Manche), Alençon (Orne)
Access
The area is close to the UK and is easily accessible by ferry,
road, and rail. Lower Normandy is not well served by air from
the UK.
Places of Interest
Falaise where William the Conqueror was born, Mont Saint Michel
island, and various seaside resorts such as Deauville and
Trouville. D-Day sites, museums,
cemeteries, and monuments. Alencon is the birthplace of Sainte
Thérèse. You can also view the famous Bayeux
Tapestry, or if you prefer to relax, a thermal bath at Bagnoles-de-l'Orne
Things to do
As well as the beaches, and historical monuments and buildings
you can visit Monet's famous gardens at Giverny. You can also
view the famous Bayeux Tapestry
Property
Lower Normandy has seen an increase in
popularity with UK citizens in recent years due to the relatively
lower prices and proximity to the UK. Prices are higher then
before now, pushed up in no small part due to the British!
Bargains in the area are becoming much harder to find
Property Investment Value
Property has risen in the area recently. The signs are that
it may continue to rise, but at a slower rate than before.
If you are looking for an investment then Lower Normandy could
be a decent bet, but there are possibly better bets elsewhere
in France if you want to travel further afield.
Cuisine
As with other areas of France the Lower
Normandy is famous for its own cuisine. Fish is popular here,
as is shellfish and duck. The area is also well known for
Calvados, and Camembert.
To Conclude
Lower Normandy has become increasingly popular over the last
few years. It is geographically close to England and is very
handy for those residents of the south of England who have
easy access to ferries and trains. If you live in Northern
England, Wales, or Scotland it is probably easier to head
for a different region and reach France by air. Lower Normandy
has historical significance, and coastal resorts, but doesn't
have the climate or spectacular scenery of French regions
further to the south.
