Limousin
General
The Limousin region of France is centrally located and has
enjoyed increasing popularity in recent years with the British,
primarily due to the comparatively lower prices here. The
area is a mixture of industry and countryside. Amongst other
things the area is well known for porcelain.
Towns and Cities
Main towns in Limousin are Tulle (Correze), Guéret,
Limoges (Haute-Vienne)
Access
The area is quite a drive from the UK and is not one of the
easiest areas to reach via air either. One of the main reasons
for its growth in popularity was the introduction of low cost
air travel to Limoges via buzzaway. However this service has
since been canceled. There are other flights to Limoges from Stansted, Southampton, Nottingham, Midlands and Liverpool. The new motorway that goes through Brive and opens up this region.
Places of Interest
The Creuse is a very pretty region, and is an hour or so from
Limoges. In winter it is reputably one of the coldest regions
of France however, so go in summer.
Oradour-sur-Glane is a living museum standing
testament to the atrocities committed by the nazis against
an entire French village in June 1944. It is a very sad place
to visit, but it is also unforgettable.
Things to do
There are various activities available in Limousin region
including fishing, walking, cycling and more. There are also
places where you can see Limoges porcelain being made.
Property
Limousin has seen an increase in popularity
with UK citizens in recent years due to the relatively low
prices. Prices are much higher then before now, pushed up
in no small part due to the British! Bargains in the area
are becoming much harder to find but some do exist. The area
is not one of the most desirable in France. So if you go by
the old property adage of 'area area area' then it probably
not for you. If on the other hand you are just looking for
the cheapest possible area then it could be worth a visit.
Property Investment Value
Property has risen in the area recently. The signs are that
it may continue to rise, but at a slower rate than before.
If you are looking for an investment then Limousin could be
a decent bet, but there are probably better bets in France
(e.g. the Alps) if it is just an investment you are looking
for.
Cuisine
As with other areas of France the Limousin
is famous for its own cuisine. Dishes here include fricasée
au tourain and Clafoutis. Cheeses include tome de Brat, and
calhada.
To Conclude
Limousin has become increasingly popular over the last few
years. On the plus side the Creuse area in particular does
boast a peaceful country setting. One negative is comparative
inaccessibility, another is that the area offers less charm
and attraction than some other areas of France. Yes it is
cheap, but it neither has the charm and scenery of the Alps,
or the weather and beach life of Languedoc
or Corsica.
