Burgundy
General
The Burgundy (Bourgogne) is to the East of France. The area
is historically significant and was a Dukedom under the Burgundy
Dukes until the late 18th century. Farming and wine production
are also important in Burgundy.
Towns and Cities
Main towns in Burgundy are Dijon (Cote d'Or), Macon (Saône
et Loire), Nevers (Nivère), and Auxerre (Yonne)
Access
The area is very well served by motorways, rail, and even canals.
Places of Interest
Véslay - Listed as a World Heritage site by UNESCO primarily
because it is a place of pilgrimage for those wishing to see
the relics of Mary Magdalen.
Also Fontenay Abbey, Cluny (Middle age abbey), and chateaux
at Bazoches, Tanlay, and Cormatin
Things to do
Burgundy is not the greatest tourist attraction in France. However,
there are things to do and see such as the wine and folklore
festival in Dijon, and the carnival at Chalon-sur-Saône
Property
Burgundy is not the most sought after region of France, possibly
due to its distance from the UK and major airports (Lyon is
possibly the nearest large airport). Nevertheless prices are
still not the cheapest.
Property Investment Value
If you intend buying a property as an investment then then Burgundy
is perhaps not the best pick of France. However, if you like
the area and intend to move permanently then investment value
shouldn't be a priority
Cuisine
As with other areas of France the Burgundy
is famous for its own cuisine and fine wines.
To Conclude
Burgundy isn't the easiest place to get to from the UK by
road or by air. So if you are looking for a holiday home it
probably better to go further south to the Alps
where the air links are better, and the scenery more spectacular.
However, Burgundy is centrally located, and is a pretty area,
so if you are not too bothered about UK access then it could
be worth considering.
